The Fund aims to achieve a return on your investment, through a combination of capital growth and income on the Fund’s assets, which reflects the total return of the MSCI World ex Select Controversies Index, the Fund’s benchmark index (Index). The Fund invests so far as possible and practicable in equity securities (e.g. shares) that make up the Index. The Index aims to reflect the performance characteristics of a subset of equity securities within the MSCI World Index (the Parent Index), which remain after the index provider (MSCI) has excluded securities using pre-defined environmental, social and governance (ESG) ratings, as set by MSCI. The Parent Index measures the performance of large and mid-capitalisation stocks across developed market countries and a range of sectors, which comply with MSCI's size, liquidity, and free-float criteria. The Index is constructed by excluding issuers, contained in the Parent Index, which are identified by the MSCI as being involved in or deriving revenue from certain activities including the production or distribution of tobacco products or civilian firearms, the mining and sale of thermal coal, the production of tar sands, the manufacture of controversial or nuclear weapons or involvement in ESG controversies as rated by MSCI. For full details please refer to the prospectus. The Index is free float-adjusted market capitalisation weighted and rebalances on a quarterly basis. Free float-adjusted means that only shares readily available in the market rather than all of a company’s issued shares are used in calculating the Index. Free float-adjusted market capitalisation is the share price of a company multiplied by the number of shares readily available in the market. The Fund is passively managed. The investment manager (IM) has limited discretion to select the Fund’s investments and in doing so will take into consideration the Index. The Fund uses optimising techniques to achieve a similar return to the Index. These techniques may include the strategic selection of certain securities that make up the Index or other securities which provide similar performance to certain constituent securities. They may also include the use of financial derivative instruments (FDIs) (i.e. investments the prices of which are based on one or more underlying assets). FDIs may be used for direct investment purposes. The IM may also use FDIs to help achieve the Fund’s investment objective, and may engage in short term secured lending of its investments to third parties, as a means of generating additional income. The price of equity securities fluctuates daily and may be influenced by factors affecting the performance of the individual companies issuing the equities, as well as by daily stock market movements, and broader economic and political developments which in turn may affect the value of your investment. The return on your investment in the Fund is directly related to the value of the underlying assets of the Fund, less costs (see “What are the costs?” below). The relationship between the return on your investment, how it is impacted and the period for which you hold your investment is considered below (see “How long should I hold it and can I take my money out early?”). The depositary of the Fund is Northern Trust Fiduciary Services (Ireland) Limited. Further information about the Fund can be obtained from the latest annual report and half-yearly reports of the BlackRock Common Contractual Fund.
